Boko Haram strikes again in Borno, 19 killed, 23 injured

It has been confirmed by the Maiduguri, Borno State Police Command, yesterday that 19 people were killed and 23 injured in the latest Boko Haram attacks in Maiduguri, late Tuesday night.

The attacks claimed the lives of 12 Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, members and seven civilians, according to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu. Recalled that no fewer than 860 CJTF members have lost their lives to the insurgency in Borno since 2014.

Chukwu, who had since visited the scenes of the attacks, told reporters in Maiduguri yesterday, that four female suicide bombers attacked Moloi, Judumeri and Polo-Sabongari areas of Maiduguri.

He said the attackers targeted a CJTF check point and detonated their explosives, killing seven of the task force members. Chukwu said that another suicide bomber denoted an explosive strapped to her body when she was intercepted by a CJTF member, killing herself and the CJTF member.

Few minutes later, he said, another suicide bomber attacked a group of mourners who gathered to symphathise with families of those killed in the earlier attacks.

His words: “The suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device, IED, killing herself and the mourners. About 12 CJTF members and seven civilians were killed in the separate attacks.

The attacks occurred between 10p.m. and 10.30p.m. on the outskirts of the metropolis.” Chukwu reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and properties, calling on residents to be vigilant and to provide useful informa-tion to security agencies.

He said government should intensify awareness campaign on the need to be security conscious. Leader of Civilian JTF in the village, Babakura Ali, said the suicide bombers entered around 9:30p.m. on Tuesday, moved to different locations and detonated IEDs strapped to their bodies killing themselves, 12 Civilian JTF and seven villagers, while 23 persons were injured.
