WWE Great Balls Of Fire Results (07/09) – Roman Reigns Destroys Braun Strowman but looses

For quick results, Neville defeated Akira Tozawa in a fun match even though the finish was a bit lackluster (it did protect Tozawa however).
The show opens highlighting various feuds such as Strowman/Reigns, Banks/Bliss, and Lesnar/Joe.
The show will start with Bray vs. Seth Rollins.
Bray Wyatt vs. Seth Rollins
Both lock up to begin with Rollins getting the better of the exchange. He waits for Wyatt to get up. They lock up again, but Wyatt pushes him back to the turnbuckle. Wyatt goes for the attack, but Seth moves out of the way. Rollins goes to attack him, but Wyatt does one of his creepy backwards pose. This startles Rollins a bit, but is able to send Wyatt outside the ring. Rollins goes for a suicide dive, but Wyatt counters with a forearm. Wyatt goes back in the ring, Rollins is able to connect with complete shot into the second turnbuckle.
Moments later, Wyatt is able to regain control by pushing Rollins off the apron into the steel steps face first. Wyatt puts Rollins back in the ring and applies a sleeper hold. Rollins is able to get out, but Wyatt is able to gain back control. After some more offense from Wyatt, he puts Rollins on top of the turnbuckle. Rollins tries to fight him off, but Wyatt is able to successfully hit a superplex from the second turnbuckle. Wyatt goes for the cover, but Rollins kicks out at two.
After several forearms to Rollins, Wyatt is able to connect with a DDT on the apron. Wyatt then puts a sleeper on Rollins. After several minutes, Rollins begins fighting out and Bray slams him down. He goes for a senton, but Rollins moves out of the way. Rollins back life a house of fire with kicks, suicide dive, and a springboard knee.
Wyatt gets Rollins in for Sister Abigail, but Rollins is able to counter with several kicks. Rollins goes to the top turnbuckle, but Wyatt storms over there and gets him in some type of backbreaker move. Wyatt covers Rollins, but only gets a nearfall. Moments later, Wyatt taunts Rollins a bit. Rollins fires back with punches and kicks sending Wyatt outside the ring. Rollins is punching on Wyatt and the referee is trying to stop him. Wyatt pokes him in the eye. He quickly goes in and then hits sister Abigail. He covers him and gets the three count.
Winner: Bray Wyatt. Decent match, but one that strongly lacked heat. Rollins is trying, but he’s just not catching on fire (and that’s more on booking than Rollins) and Wyatt’s character has been slowly destroyed by booking for years. Again a solid match, but nobody really cared.
The Hardys do an interview basically stating that they are winning tonight.

Enzo Amore vs. Big Cass
Enzo cuts a passionate promo that fires up the crowd. Big Cass came out to some new, but weak entrance music that sounded like it was very last minute. Enzo goes after Cass with pushes, but eventually is shut down with a hard shoulder block. Cass beats down Enzo at the turnbuckle with punches and kicks. He then puts Enzo is some weird submission/ not submission move (?). He pushes Enzo around some more and then hits a fallaway slam.
Winner: Big Cass. This was basically a squash match, which really is no surprise. WWE is really missing the boat by speeding through this story. Both men could have walked out looking great in this feud (or as good as they could based on their abilities), but instead this was all about Cass, who still needs some work if he’s going to be a single’s star. Let’s start by changing that generic and boring entrance music first.
30 Minutes Ironman Tag Team Match: The Hardy Boyz vs. Sheamus & Cesaro (c)
The Hardys came out to a nice pop. Cesaro and Sheamus came out to a ok pop (these guys need a manager). The match starts with Matt Hardy. Cesaro flies past Matt Hardy. Matt turns around and gets a brogue kick (This was actually clever). Sheamus then pins Cesaro while Jeff just stands on the apron doing nothing. Its now 1 – 0 for Sheamus and Cesaro. Jeff tags in and gets the better of Cesaro. Cesaro tags Seamus and then attempt to do a double team move, but Jeff counters with a dropkick. Jeff gets the heat a bit on Sheamus and then tags Matt.
He comes in with a flying elbow and then goes to work on Sheamus. Matt follows Sheamus outside the ring and bangs his head into the apron several times. He puts Sheamus back in the ring. He goes for the Twist of fate, but Sheamus counters out of it. Matt is able to connect with a slam and covers Sheamus. He kicks out at two.
Eventually Matt tags Jeff. They hit a double team move and Sheamus sends Jeff outside the ring. Cesaro tackle Jeff hard into the barricade. Matt comes over and punches on Cesaro, but Cesaro is able to gain control of the fight. Sheamus puts Jeff back in the ring and gets the heat on him. For several minutes Sheamus and Cesaro work over Jeff Hardy. Matt plays cheerleader on the apron, but Cesaro knocks him off with a big boot. Sheamus and Cesaro then connects with a white noise/flying elbow combination. Sheamus covers him and gets the three count. 2-0 for Sheamus and Cesaro.
Matt gets back on the apron. Sheamus works over Jeff some more. Jeff finally counters and both men are down. Jeff tags Matt as Sheamus tags Cesaro. Matt comes in wild with strikes getting the crowd into a frenzy. Matt continues to get the better of of Cesaro. He tags Jeff. Jeff knocks Sheamus off the apron. Then the Hardys hit the poerty in motion. Jeff connects with a twist of fate. He covers Cesaro and gets a three count. Score is 2 (Sheamus/Cesaro) 1 (The Hardyz). Jeff works over Cesaro with various moves. He tags Jeff and they connect with a double team move.
Eventually, the match breaks down after Cesaro tags Sheamus (Matt was tagged in by this point). Both teams go at it with Sheamus and Cesaro ending up outside the ring. Jeff flies over the top rope onto Sheamus and Cesaro. Both fight outside as the referee counts.
Sheamus gets in the ring. As Matt attempts to beat the count, but Cesaro pulls him back and sends him into the ring post hard. The referee counts to ten and Sheamus and Cesaro win by countout. 3-1. Matt is brought back in the ring and Sheamus and Cesaro work over a beaten Matt for a brief period. Jeff eventually gets the tag after the long heat and immediately gets the pin with a bridge move. 3-2. Jeff is able to connect with a whisper in the wind on Cesaro. He covers him and gets a close two count. Jeff hits more flashy offense, but Cesaro is able to derail his momentum. He tags Sheamus.
Again Sheamus works over Jeff methodically as the time counts down. As Cesaro and Sheamus is about to connect with a white noise/flying elbow combination, but Matt pushes Cesaro off the apron. Jeff is able to counter Sheamus and then tags Matt. Matt comes in and works over Sheamus. Moments later, he connects with the twist of fate.
He goes for the cover, but Cesaro makes the save. Jeff sends Cesaro out the ring. Sheamus goes to the top turnbuckle and Matt meets him up there. Matt fights Sheamus and then connects with a twist of fate from the top turnbuckle. The match is 3-3. The match is down to its last two minutes and gets into a chaotic mode. Jeff is eventually tagged in during this frenzy as well as Cesaro. Jeff is finally able to nail the swanton on Sheamus. Matt was opened hard way during this.
However, Cesaro swiftly comes in and pins Jeff for a three count. The match is now 4 (Sheamus/Cesaro) 3 (The Hardys). The last seconds of the match Cesaro ran around the ring with Jeff chasing him. They get in the ring and Jeff connects with the twist of fate at 3 seconds. He goes for the cover, but the timer runs out.
Winner: Sheamus and Cesaro. A really good match. I feel the match was a bit bogged down by the stipulation as the teams were going for covers constantly. However, these teams worked hard and delivered a fun match especially during the last few minutes. The ending left open an opportunity for these two to continue the feud, so don’t be surprised if these two meet again at Summerslam.
WWE Raw Women’s Championship match: Sasha Banks vs. Alexa Bliss (c)
In the early going’s Banks would continue to get the better of Bliss until a spot that seemed like Bliss twisted her arm. Its was the classic fake injury and sucker your opponent angle (even though Bliss’s arm did look disjointed). Bliss delivered a forearm once Banks came near her and then popped her arm back in i think (just going by what the announcers are saying). Banks was able to fighting back. She sends Bliss out the ring. Bliss decides she’s had enough and walks to the back. Sasha chases after her and sends her into the apron. Banks gets on the apron, but Bliss sweeps her legs and Banks lands back first on the apron. Bliss works over Banks back for a long period. After he comeback moment, Banks goes for the Bank statement, but Bliss scurries out the ring. She comes back in the ring and moment later, Banks locks her in the bank statement. Bliss teases tapping out, but she’s able to grab the ropes. Banks goes for the bank statement again, but Bliss counters out of it. She ends up at the turnbuckle.
Banks runs to Bliss, but is hit and then Bliss connects with a code red sunset flip. She gets a two count. Bliss throws a little tantrum. She goes to the top turnbuckle. She attempts a twisted Bliss, but Banks gets her knees up. Bliss gets outside. Sasha tries to grab her, but Bliss slaps her hard as the referee counts. Bliss intentionally sits outside the ring as the referee counts to ten.
Not satisfied with a countout victory, Banks goes after Bliss. The two brawl on the stage with Bliss getting the better of the exchange. Bliss tears apart the announcer’s table and puts Banks on it. She puts her in the position of a DDT, but Banks sends her flying from the announcer’s table to the floor. Moments later, Banks connects with two knees from the table.
Winner: Sasha Banks by countout. A good match and Bliss’s best showing to date. I’m a bit surprised that this feud is continuing as I thought Bliss/Jax would be happening at Summerslam, but I’m not complaining.
WWE Intercontinental Championship match: Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz w/Maryse, Bo Dallas, and Curtis Axel (c)
Shenanigans between Miz’s entourage and Ambrose start the match. Ambrose runs wild on all three men until Miz is able to get the advantage. Miz gets the heat on Ambrose as he connects with his usual moves such as his snap ddt, turnbuckle clotheslines among some moves. Ambrose shows flashes of coming back, but is cut off quickly by Miz due to inference. Miz is applies the figure four and is able to keep the pressure on for a few minutes. Ambrose is able to get out of it and have a fiery come back while selling his knee. Dall and Axel interfere once again, but Dean connects with an elbow to all three men. After several attempts of his ddt finisher, he finally connects. Maryse puts Miz’s foot on the bottom rope. Axel gets on the apron and Ambrose tosses him in the ring. With the referee distracted by Maryse, Dallas hits Ambrose from behind. The Miz then connects with the skull crushing finale and covers him. He gets the three count.
Winner: The Miz. These guys work well together, but this never ending feud needs to, well, end. Its the same song and dance every time and I’m surprised the crowd was even receptive to this match. I hope this is the last time we see this match, but I won’t hold my breath. In terms of the match, it was well worked. However, if you’ve seen one (or hundreds) Ambrose/Miz match then you’ve already seen it.

Ambulance match: Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
Strowman runs to Reigns, but Reigns catches him with an uppercut. Roman connects with punches to Strowman and runs from the ropes. He’s met with a clothesline by Strowman. Strowman puts to the turnbuckle and hits several clotheslines. He sends Reigns out the ring.
Once Strowman gets out the ring, Roman sends him into the ring post. Strowman comes back an tosses him into the barricade then the steel steps. Strowman grabs the steep steps and hits him. After Reigns gets up, Strowman hits him with the steel steps again.
As Reigns lies against the ring post, Strowman runs with the steel steps in hand to him. Reigns moves out of the way and the steps connects with the post. Strowman runs to Reigns, but connects with the ring post instead.
Strowman gets in the ring. Roman punches Strowman several more times and then runs the ropes. Strowman is able to grab his throat and connect with a reverse chokeslam. Moments later, Strowman connects with his powerslam finisher and mistakenly goes for the cover. Strowman taunts and then tries to pick up Reigns. He’s able to counter with a samoan drop. Reigns is at the turnbuckle selling his ribs. Strowman gets up and runs full steam towards him, but Reigns is able to move out of the way. Strowman’s injured arm connects with the steel post. Reigns goes outside and grabs a steel chair. He hits the chair on Strowman’s arm several times against the steep post. As Strowman gets outside the ring, Reigns continues to connect with chair shots to Strowman’s arm.
With each shot, Reigns no sells it. Eventually, Strowman grabs the chair from Reigns and sends him into the barricade. He continues beat Reigns up the ramp. Reigns tries to fight back, but Strowman stops him, launches him into the ambulance. Strowman opens the ambulance door and tries to get him into it. Reigns fights him off, but Strowman is able to come back beating Reigns down and sends him onto the stage. The two have a back and forth on the stage with Reigns sending Strowman through the lower titantron in a cool move. After both guys sell the beating, Strowman gets up. Strowman tosses Reigns off the stage. He then hits him with a stage light. Strowman opens the doors. Reigns charges fast going for a spear, but Braun moves out of the way. Roman is in the ambulance and Strowman closes the door.
As Strowman celebrates his victory, Reigns sneaks attacks Braun behind and puts him in the ambulance. He tosses the driver out and gets inside it. He drives off into the parking lot. Looking crazed, Reigns presses on the gas and drives back in reverse. The ambulance backs into another truck as Strowman is still inside.
A Hawkins/Slater match happened as everyone was trying to get Strowman out, but it was clear that the focus was on Strowman, not the match. In the end, Strowman was able to limp bloody and bruised. And the match was announced with Slater wining.
Winner: Braun Strowman. First, a great match. These two work well together and continue to produce fun matches. The after math of the match is the real story. Reigns has been coming across as a heel for the past few months, but tonight Reigns was a jealous, bitter person who was willing to kill his opponent after he lost fair and square (yes I know this is wrestling). Reigns was the heel here. And Strowman came across as the sympathetic babyface. The announcer’s even acknowledged how hineous Reigns actions were. This was a very interesting development and it finally seems like wwe is turning Reigns heel. Raw tomorrow night just became more interesting.
WWE Universal Championship match: Samoa Joe vs. Brock Lesnar (c)
Samoa Joe attacked Lesnar as Heyman was announcing for Lesnar. He beat up Lesnar around the ring and put him through the announcer’s table with a rock bottom. Joe goes back in the ring and waits for Lesnar to get back in. After selling being out, Lesnar gets back in the ring. The match officially starts and Joe attacks Lesnar viciously. Lesnar and Joe fight back and forth with Joe getting the better of the two. Joe applies to the coquina clutch. Brock grabs the ropes. Lesnar is able to connect with two german suplexes. He goes for a third, but Joe grabs the referee and connects with a low blow and then a uranage.
He covers Lesnar, but only gets a two count. Joe goes back to applying the coquina clutch, but Lesnar gets out. Lesnar gets him up for an F5, but Joe is able to counter back into the coquina clutch. After teasing going out, Lesnar is able to escape the submission. Lesnar connects with two more german suplexes. He attempts an F5 again, but Joe gets out it with another coquina clutch. Lesnar back into the turnbuckle, but Joe get his Legs around him. Lesnar is able to get him up for an F5 and connect. He covers Joe and gets the three count.
Winner: Brock Lesnar. First, another great match, but was way too short for my liking. Second, I feel Joe should have kicked out that first F5. This is more so nitpicking from me as Joe looked good in defeat. This wasn’t dominate Brock. Hopefully we’ll see more from these two.
Overall, the best raw brand split show thus far. Nothing was bad and the Strowman/Reigns angle was newsworthy. Lesnar/Joe was great, but should have had more time. Thanks for following along.
