John Terry: Aston Villa must go up as champions - or at least finish in the top two

John Terry admits that it’ll be hard to ignore the expectation on Aston Villa heading into the new campaign. Having recruited Terry, the claret and blues - with perennial promoter Steve Bruce at the helm - are among the favourites to find themselves at the top end of the division come May 2018.

With positive transfer recruitment, which has seen experienced pair Glenn Whelan and Ahmed Elmohamady also brought in, comes added pressure to succeed - something Terry acknowledges.

“Yeah, you could say that,” he said. “The manager has pulled everyone together, his vision is clear, the players have the same ambitions and rightly so. “We have to go up as champions, if not automatically. Does that bring more pressure on you? Probably. Do we like that as a group?

“Yeah. I think we have to handle that. We are one of the biggest clubs in the league and with the history of this club as well, it deserves to be back in the Premier League.”
