Messi scores on return to international football
– Lionel Messi makes remarkable return to Argentina with a goal against Uruguay
– Argentina remains top of the World Cup qualifying standings after seven matches
– Neymar and Gabriel Jesus scores for Brazil in their 3-0 win against Ecuador
Argentina captain Lionel Messi marked his return to international football scoring the winning goal as the Blue and White stripe defeated Uruguay 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Mendoza. The Barcelona superstar netted three minutes before half time after his shot was deflected into net by Jose Gimenez to give Edgardo Bauza a winning start to his reign as Argentina coach.
Despite playing the entire second 45 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Juventus forward Paulo Dybala for a second bookable offence, the Argentine team were in control of the match and held on for the win.
Messi called it quits after Argentina lost the Copa America final to Chile in June only to reverse his decision last month after much persuasion from team coach Bauza.
Argentina are now top of the CONMEBOL qualifying standings with just one point separating them from Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador after seven games.
Meanwhile, a goal from Neymar and a brace for Manchester new signing Gabriel Jesus who also made a senior debut was all Brazil needed to overcome Ecuador in Tite’s first competitive match since taking over from Dunga. The Selecao remained fifth on the table as they go into their next game against Colombia.
