New Boko Haram video is fake, adulterated, Nigerian military says
The Nigeria military on Thursday said the recent video released by Boko Haram, in which thousands of the insurgents were shown celebrating the Islamic festival of Eidel Kabir, was manipulated and not a true representation of the current state of the group.
Boko Haram on Wednesday released a YouTube video in which they boasted of their membership strength and also threatened to kidnap President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Defence Headquarters in a statement said the video was a ‘photoshop’ of an older video released by the group in 2014.
In the statement signed by the Acting Director Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, the military said “the video clip is a complete show of weakness and sign that the end is near for the insurgents, hence it does not in any way poses threat to us.”
Mr. Abubakar, a Brigadier General, said the Nigerian military is ready to sustain its hostility against the insurgents. He called on the insurgents to take the path of peace by surrendering.
“While our operation will continue as planned with many terrorists already surrendering and may captives rescued, we advise all the remaining surviving Boko Haram terrorists to surrender now for their own good,” he said.
Boko Haram seeks to rule Northern Nigeria by enforcing strict Sharia law. Its activities have caused the death of about 20,000 persons and displacement of about two million others, mostly women and children.
