
Following his recent horror collision with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina, Pedro is set to become the latest in a long line of Chelsea players who will take to the pitch with a protective facial mask. The winger was clattered in the face by the Gunners stop, sent tumbling to the turf with blood immediately dripping from his nose.
With a congested fixture list and each game as important as the next, footballers can no longer afford to allow a broken nose or fractured cheekbone to rule them out of action, and gone are the face masks worn by the likes of John Terry nine years ago; the modern-day footballer now insists on customised protection.
