South African athlete Wayde van Niekerk is up to take Usaine Bolt's place as athletics superstar, Usaine had made clear. Bolt is due to retire from the sport after the World Athletics Championships, which start in London on Friday. He has been the big thing at athletics championships since he topped the 100m and 200m sprints at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The BBC's Dan Roan, Bol asked him who is now "best equipped to take your place as the preeminent star in track and field". Bolt said:
Van Niekerk is really proving that he is a world star.... He's proven that he can step up to the plate." The South African won the gold in the 400m at last year's Rio Olympics in a world-record time of 43.03 seconds: Report He has also been faster than anyone in the 300m sprint, and will compete in the 200m and also the 400m in at the World Athletics Championships.
