Manchester United Make A Move For This Barcelona Sensation: Can Jose Get This Done?

Despite having being linked with a number of players, Manchester United have only brought in three players in Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Matic where as Jose Mourinho’s counterpart Pep Guardiola has signed a plethora of players as Manchester City have undergone a complete makeover since the end of the last season.

Jose Mourinho has underlined the arrival of at least four players to the Old Trafford this summer and Sergi Roberto could be the fourth entrant.

United have reportedly offered a massive £36m for the Spanish midfielder.

Jose Mourinho wants adequate backup for every position and the move for Roberto is only a result of that.

Jose Mourinho’s options were limited last season but having earned a Champions League place, the Portuguese gaffer wants to take advantage of this situation.

Roberto had been a regular under Luis Enrique as the gaffer converted him to a right back and the move paid rich dividends towards the end of last season.

After losing Dani Alves to Juventus, Barcelona signed Aleix Vidal from Sevilla to replace the Brazilian but the defender was very unimpressive and Enrique decided to field the 25-year-old in this unconventional position.

Despite having no prior experience, Roberto fared pretty well last season as he racked up six assists in the La Liga.

But this season his position at the club is in danger following the arrival of Nelson Semedo. Semedo is destined to be the first choice under new manager Ernesto Valverde and Roberto might take this opportunity to look for alternate options.

United have been linked heavily with Monaco’s Fabinho as Mourinho has aimed to rebuff his midfield and right back position.

But following the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, Mourinho is now targeting to get a decent acquisition for the right side of the defence and Roberto seems the perfect player for him.

The Catalans have already lost Neymar to Paris Saint German as the French club paid a world record transfer fee to sign the Brazilian. Barcelona are unwilling to release further players and Roberto seems keen to continue his service at the Nou Camp.

Antonio Valencia is currently the preferred choice in the right wing back position and Mourinho wants another player to pose competition to the Ecuador international.

Matteo Darmian has mostly been used on the left side to deputise in the absence of Luke Shaw and he is set to continue this season too. A product of the La Masia, Roberto would be seeking assurances over regular game time as he has the fear of losing his spot in the starting lineup.
